The scams that reach most people.
Nine patterns account for most of what arrives by text, call and email. Each page shows how the pattern runs, how to tell, what to do if it already happened, and an example you can run through Check.
Patterns
- Unpaid-toll textA text about a small unpaid toll, a deadline and a link. The link is the scam.
- Package-held textA delivery that does not exist, a small fee that opens the door to your card.
- Bank “fraud alert” textThe alert is fake. The call that follows is the scam.
- “IRS” callThe IRS does not call to demand payment, threaten arrest or ask for gift cards.
- Grandparent callA frightened voice, an emergency, and a reason not to tell anyone. The reason is the tell.
- Tech-support popupThe warning is a web page. The number is the scam. The remote access is the damage.
- Job-offer textA job you did not apply for, pay that sounds too good, and a fee or a deposit later on.
- Romance scamAttention first, a crisis later, and a reason you can never meet in person.
- Extortion emailThe password in the email is real, and it came from an old breach, not from your webcam.
